BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday extended his congratulations to Mahinda Rajapaksa on the latter's assuming office as Sri Lanka's new prime minister.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday issued an executive order banning any U.S. transactions with Chinese tech firm ByteDance, owner of TikTok, starting in 45 days.
Noting China will not allow these people to get their way, Wang stressed that China rejects any attempt to create a so-called "new Cold War", because it contravenes the fundamental interests of the Chinese and American peoples and the global trend toward development and progress.
"We urge the U.S. side to heed rational voices from within and from the international community, correct its wrongdoing, refrain from politicizing economic issues and stop suppressing relevant enterprises, to create a fair, just and non-discriminatory environment for companies worldwide to have normal business operations and investments," Wang added. "That is a stance that will hurt Trump in the elections, as it is ordinary citizens that are bearing the high costs of failed policies, such as the trade war," he said.
He also recalled that while the world was clamoring travel restrictions to and from China during the outbreak, Cambodia had maintained its commercial and tourist flights to and from China to ensure China's economy vis-à-vis regional supply chain remain less impacted.
Over the past 40 years and more since the two countries entered into diplomatic ties, several generations of Chinese and Americans have worked together to advance China-U.S. relations, Wang said.
"It is certainly something that we can achieve together," he said.
The spokesperson reiterated that the Taiwan question is the most important and sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations, and the one-China principle is the political foundation of the bilateral relationship.
