1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "I don't know any one," he replied.
2. Curiously, as he troubled over his future, his thoughtsoccasionally reverted to his wife and family. He had avoidedsuch thoughts for the first three years as much as possible. Hehated her, and he could get along without her. Let her go. Hewould do well enough. Now, however, when he was not doing wellenough, he began to wonder what she was doing, how his childrenwere getting along. He could see them living as nicely as ever, occupying the comfortable house and using his property.
3. "Oh, because," she said, "I wouldn't want to."
4. "Let her go now, quick," said the officer, and again he was off.
5. Carrie sat still, looking out. She was wondering what she coulddo. They would be expecting her to go home this week.
6. She made no answer to this.

计划指导

1. She was relieved to see that he felt nothing. She did not credither willingness to go to any fascination Hurstwood held for her.It seemed that the combination of Hurstwood, Drouet, and herselfwas more agreeable than anything else that had been suggested. She arrayed herself most carefully and they started off, extending excuses upstairs.
2. "Well, you act like it, rowing around over my looks. You'd thinkI'd committed----"
3. "You're not doing anything. Get yourself a nice pair of shoesand a jacket."
4. Within a day or two, Drouet dropped into the Adams Street resort, and he was at once spied by Hurstwood. It was at five in theafternoon and the place was crowded with merchants, actors, managers, politicians, a goodly company of rotund, rosy figures,silk-hatted, starchy-bosomed, beringed and bescarfpinned to thequeen's taste. John L. Sullivan, the pugilist, was at one end ofthe glittering bar, surrounded by a company of loudly dressedsports, who were holding a most animated conversation. Drouetcame across the floor with a festive stride, a new pair of tanshoes squeaking audibly at his progress.
5. This pleased Hurstwood immensely. He gave Drouet no credit forany feelings toward Carrie whatever. He envied him, and now, ashe looked at the well-dressed jolly salesman, whom he so muchliked, the gleam of the rival glowed in his eye. He began to"size up" Drouet from the standpoints of wit and fascination. Hebegan to look to see where he was weak. There was no disputingthat, whatever he might think of him as a good fellow, he felt acertain amount of contempt for him as a lover. He could hoodwinkhim all right. Why, if he would just let Carrie see one suchlittle incident as that of Thursday, it would settle the matter. He ran on in thought, almost exulting, the while he laughed andchatted, and Drouet felt nothing. He had no power of analysingthe glance and the atmosphere of a man like Hurstwood. He stoodand smiled and accepted the invitation while his friend examinedhim with the eye of a hawk.
6. "There's no use explaining to you about this," he said at last."There's no use of your asking me. I'm no fool, you know. Iknow just what you can do and what you can't. You can create alot of trouble if you want to. I know that all right, but itwon't help you to get the money. Now, I've made up my mind whatto do. I've already written Fitzgerald and Moy, so there'snothing I can say. You wait until you hear more from them."

1. "What of?" he answered. "The police are protecting them."
2. They went through Monroe Street to the old Windsor dining-room,which was then a large, comfortable place, with an excellentcuisine and substantial service. Drouet selected a table close bythe window, where the busy rout of the street could be seen. Heloved the changing panorama of the street--to see and be seen ashe dined.
3. "Minnie! What's the matter? Here, wake up," said Hanson, disturbed, and shaking her by the shoulder.
4. "Well, she ought to know better than to want to go out alone."
5. "Come with me in here a minute," she exclaimed, turning into astore.
6. "So long," said the other, smiling affably and going on.

应用

1. Carrie laughed ecstatically.
2. She said nothing more then, objecting to giving up her own money, and yet feeling that such would have to be the case. Hurstwoodfelt the crisis, and artfully decided to appeal to Carrie. Hehad long since realised how good-natured she was, how much shewould stand. There was some little shame in him at the thoughtof doing so, but he justified himself with the thought that hereally would get something. Rent day gave him his opportunity.
3. "Lord," he said, hastening out of the street into which the morefortunate were pouring, "I've got to get something."
4、 "I wish I was out of all this," she exclaimed gloomily.
5、 "We think we'll do very well," Mr. Quincel replied. "Don't youforget now," he concluded, Drouet showing signs of restlessness;"some young woman to take the part of Laura."

While he was doing so, the youth who had advised him to come hereentered, and, seeing Hurstwood, tried to be genial.

Carrie heard this with genuine sorrow. She had enjoyed Mrs.Vance's companionship so much. There was no one else in thehouse whom she knew. Again she would be all alone.

Curiously, for all her leaning towards Hurstwood, he had nottaken a firm hold on her understanding. She was listening, smiling, approving, and yet not finally agreeing. This was dueto a lack of power on his part, a lack of that majesty of passionthat sweeps the mind from its seat, fuses and melts all argumentsand theories into a tangled mass, and destroys for the time beingthe reasoning power. This majesty of passion is possessed bynearly every man once in his life, but it is usually an attributeof youth and conduces to the first successful mating.

The whole of this conversation was such a shock that, coming asit did after all the other worry of the past week, it sufficed toinduce a deep gloom and moral revulsion in Hurstwood. What hurthim most was the fact that he was being pursued as a thief. Hebegan to see the nature of that social injustice which sees butone side--often but a single point in a long tragedy. All thenewspapers noted but one thing, his taking the money. How andwherefore were but indifferently dealt with. All thecomplications which led up to it were unknown. He was accusedwithout being understood.

"Silence!" exclaimed the captain. "Now, then, gentlemen, thesemen are without beds. They have to have some place to sleep to-night. They can't lie out in the streets. I need twelve centsto put one of them to bed. Who will give it to me?"
