1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Now Carrie was affected by music. Her nervous compositionresponded to certain strains, much as certain strings of a harpvibrate when a corresponding key of a piano is struck. She wasdelicately moulded in sentiment, and answered with vagueruminations to certain wistful chords. They awoke longings forthose things which she did not have. They caused her to clingcloser to things she possessed. One short song the young ladyplayed in a most soulful and tender mood. Carrie heard itthrough the open door from the parlour below. It was at thathour between afternoon and night when, for the idle, thewanderer, things are apt to take on a wistful aspect. The mindwanders forth on far journeys and returns with sheaves ofwithered and departed joys. Carrie sat at her window lookingout. Drouet had been away since ten in the morning. She hadamused herself with a walk, a book by Bertha M. Clay which Drouethad left there, though she did not wholly enjoy the latter, andby changing her dress for the evening. Now she sat looking outacross the park as wistful and depressed as the nature whichcraves variety and life can be under such circumstances. As shecontemplated her new state, the strain from the parlour belowstole upward. With it her thoughts became coloured and enmeshed. She reverted to the things which were best and saddest within thesmall limit of her experience. She became for the moment arepentant.
2. Carrie listened with eager ears. These things never came upbetween her and Hurstwood. Nevertheless, she began to suggestone thing and another, which Hurstwood agreed to without anyexpression of opinion. He noticed the new tendency on Carrie'spart, and finally, hearing much of Mrs. Vance and her delightfulways, suspected whence the change came. He was not inclined tooffer the slightest objection so soon, but he felt that Carrie'swants were expanding. This did not appeal to him exactly, but hecared for her in his own way, and so the thing stood. Still, there was something in the details of the transactions whichcaused Carrie to feel that her requests were not a delight tohim. He did not enthuse over the purchases. This led her tobelieve that neglect was creeping in, and so another small wedgewas entered.
3. What sort of an actress was she?
4. Transplantation is not always successful in the matter of flowersor maidens. It requires sometimes a richer soil, a betteratmosphere to continue even a natural growth. It would have beenbetter if her acclimatization had been more gradual--less rigid. She would have done better if she had not secured a position soquickly, and had seen more of the city which she constantlytroubled to know about.
5. "I don't know," said Carrie; "I'll go down Monday and see if Ican't get something."
6. "You don't know how to run a car," rejoined the voice.

1. While he was idly pondering, satisfied to be inside, a well-dressed man passed up the lobby, stopped, looked sharply, as ifnot sure of his memory, and then approached. Hurstwoodrecognised Cargill, the owner of the large stables in Chicago ofthe same name, whom he had last seen at Avery Hall, the nightCarrie appeared there. The remembrance of how this individualbrought up his wife to shake hands on that occasion was also onthe instant clear.
2. When she reached the flat Hurstwood was not there. For a wonderhe was out looking for work, as she supposed. She took only amouthful to eat and then practised on, sustained by visions offreedom from financial distress--"The sound of glory ringing inher ears."
3. "Who's on there?" asked the second officer, referring, of course,to its complement of policemen.
4. Her spirits sank so that at supper Minnie felt that she must havehad another hard day. Carrie finally decided that she would givethe money back. It was wrong to take it. She would go down inthe morning and hunt for work. At noon she would meet Drouet asagreed and tell him. At this decision her heart sank, until shewas the old Carrie of distress.
5. Her sobs disturbed him so that he was quite sure she did not heara word he said.
6. "Saturday?" asked Carrie.

1. Thus the Warren Street arrangement was permanently concluded.
2. "What can a man do?" he said. "I can't starve."
4. Being left alone in this little place, Carrie did without a girl. She made it charming enough, but could not make it delight her.Hurstwood was not inwardly pleased to think that they should haveto modify their state, but he argued that he could do nothing. He must put the best face on it, and let it go at that.
5. A half-dollar was passed over, and now a knock came at herdressing-room door.Carrie opened it.
6. He bought two tickets and Pullman berths. Then he hastened backto Carrie.

1. "Eh?" he said, looking out. "Dramatic agents? I don't know. You'll find them in the 'Clipper,' though. They all advertise inthat."
2. "Don't you moralise," said Hurstwood to Carrie gently, "until yousee what becomes of the money."
3. "Yes; dere is nothing to dat. It iss all over."
4、 Carrie looked gratefully at Hurstwood, and smiled at Drouet. Theformer took the air of a mere friend. He was simply there toenjoy himself. Anything that Carrie did was pleasing to him, nothing more.
5、 "And you repent already?" she said, slowly.

  • 梁崇平 08-01

{ He tried to show Carrie that there was no cause for financialalarm, but only congratulation over the chance he would have atthe end of the year by taking her rather more frequently to thetheatre and by providing a liberal table. This was for the timeonly. He was getting in the frame of mind where he wantedprincipally to be alone and to be allowed to think. The diseaseof brooding was beginning to claim him as a victim. Only thenewspapers and his own thoughts were worth while. The delight oflove had again slipped away. It was a case of live, now, makingthe best you can out of a very commonplace station in life.

  • 刘福林 08-01

"Who is he?" asked Carrie. doubtfully.
