1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Sitting in the lodging-house room, he came to his last fiftycents. He had saved and counted until his health was affected. His stoutness had gone. With it, even the semblance of a fit inhis clothes. Now he decided he must do something, and, walkingabout, saw another day go by, bringing him down to his lasttwenty cents--not enough to eat for the morrow.
2. "Oh, jolly!" cried the latter.
3. The truth is that Mrs. Hale was not the only one who had athought on this score. The housemaid who had welcomed Hurstwoodhad her opinion also. She had no particular regard for Carrie, whom she took to be cold and disagreeable. At the same time, shehad a fancy for the merry and easy-mannered Drouet, who threw hera pleasant remark now and then, and in other ways extended herthe evidence of that regard which he had for all members of thesex. Hurstwood was more reserved and critical in his manner. Hedid not appeal to this bodiced functionary in the same pleasantway. She wondered that he came so frequently, that Mrs. Drouetshould go out with him this afternoon when Mr. Drouet was absent. She gave vent to her opinions in the kitchen where the cook was.As a result, a hum of gossip was set going which moved about thehouse in that secret manner common to gossip.
4. That was not before he had become settled, however. Carrie andhe went looking for a flat, as arranged, and found one inSeventy-eighth Street near Amsterdam Avenue. It was a five-storybuilding, and their flat was on the third floor. Owing to thefact that the street was not yet built up solidly, it waspossible to see east to the green tops of the trees in CentralPark and west to the broad waters of the Hudson, a glimpse ofwhich was to be had out of the west windows. For the privilegeof six rooms and a bath, running in a straight line, they werecompelled to pay thirty-five dollars a month--an average, and yetexorbitant, rent for a home at the time. Carrie noticed thedifference between the size of the rooms here and in Chicago andmentioned it.
5. Accordingly, Mrs. Hurstwood decided to broach the subject. Shewas thinking this over when she came down to the table, but forsome reason the atmosphere was wrong. She was not sure, after itwas all over, just how the trouble had begun. She was determinednow, however, that her husband was a brute, and that, under nocircumstances, would she let this go by unsettled. She wouldhave more lady-like treatment or she would know why.
6. "Fifty dollars."

计划指导

1. Accordingly, when he came out he was glad to see the lobby clear, and hastened toward the stairs. He would get Carrie and go outby the ladies' entrance. They would have breakfast in some moreinconspicuous place.
2. She put it back, and proceeded to get dinner early and in goodtime. Her little bravado made her feel as if she ought to makeamends.
3. Then he went to the door, took a good look around and went out.
4. "She couldn't come to-night. She's not well."
5. "I'll not have anything to do with you," said Carrie. "I want toget off this train. Where are we going?"
6. Timid as Carrie was, she was strong in capability. The relianceof others made her feel as if she must, and when she must shedared. Experience of the world and of necessity was in herfavour. No longer the lightest word of a man made her headdizzy. She had learned that men could change and fail. Flatteryin its most palpable form had lost its force with her. Itrequired superiority--kindly superiority--to move her--thesuperiority of a genius like Ames.

1. "Now," he observed to Drouet, with a tone of good-fellowship,"when you leave your wife alone, you must let me show her arounda little. It will break up her loneliness."
2. "Yes," he returned; "but you can't go by what the papers say. They'll run the cars all right."
3. She put her two little hands together and pressed themappealingly.
4. "You said Charlie was hurt," said Carrie, savagely. "Youdeceived me. You've been deceiving me all the time, and now youwant to force me to run away with you."
5. "Are we going to McVicker's Monday?" questioned Mrs. Hurstwood, without rising.
6. "Say, that fits like a T, don't it?" he remarked, feeling the setof it at the waist and eyeing it from a few paces with realpleasure. "What you need now is a new skirt. Let's go tobreakfast."

应用

1. "I want you to send the money I asked for at once. I need it tocarry out my plans. You can stay away if you want to. Itdoesn't matter in the least. But I must have some money. Sodon't delay, but send it by the boy."
2. "So I was," he exclaimed. "I couldn't help the interruption, butI made up for it afterward by working until two."
3. "If I were you," went on Drouet, ignoring her last remark, "Iwouldn't have anything to do with him. He's a married man, youknow."
4、 "If you do, maybe I can help you. I've got a lot of friends inthat line."
5、 "It isn't very difficult," returned Hurstwood. "You could dovery well in a few weeks."

Sister Carrie gazed out of the window. Her companion, affectedby her wonder, so contagious are all things, felt anew someinterest in the city and pointed out its marvels.

Visions of a big stake floated before him. Supposing he did wina couple of hundred, wouldn't he be in it? Lots of sports he knewmade their living at this game, and a good living, too.

With the wane of the afternoon went her hopes, her courage, andher strength. She had been astonishingly persistent. So earnestan effort was well deserving of a better reward. On every hand,to her fatigued senses, the great business portion grew larger, harder, more stolid in its indifference. It seemed as if it wasall closed to her, that the struggle was too fierce for her tohope to do anything at all. Men and women hurried by in long, shifting lines. She felt the flow of the tide of effort andinterest--felt her own helplessness without quite realising thewisp on the tide that she was. She cast about vainly for somepossible place to apply, but found no door which she had thecourage to enter. It would be the same thing all over. The oldhumiliation of her plea, rewarded by curt denial. Sick at heartand in body, she turned to the west, the direction of Minnie'sflat, which she had now fixed in mind, and began that wearisome, baffled retreat which the seeker for employment at nightfall toooften makes. In passing through Fifth Avenue, south towards VanBuren Street, where she intended to take a car, she passed thedoor of a large wholesale shoe house, through the plate-glasswindows of which she could see a middle-aged gentleman sitting ata small desk. One of those forlorn impulses which often grow outof a fixed sense of defeat, the last sprouting of a baffled anduprooted growth of ideas, seized upon her. She walkeddeliberately through the door and up to the gentleman, who lookedat her weary face with partially awakened interest.

{ There had been something so personal, so subtle, in each meetingbetween them, both when Drouet was present and when he wasabsent, that Carrie could not speak of it without feeling a senseof difficulty. She was no talker. She could never arrange herthoughts in fluent order. It was always a matter of feeling withher, strong and deep. Each time there had been no sentence ofimportance which she could relate, and as for the glances andsensations, what woman would reveal them? Such things had neverbeen between her and Drouet. As a matter of fact, they couldnever be. She had been dominated by distress and theenthusiastic forces of relief which Drouet represented at anopportune moment when she yielded to him. Now she was persuadedby secret current feelings which Drouet had never understood.Hurstwood's glance was as effective as the spoken words of alover, and more. They called for no immediate decision, andcould not be answered.
