1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "There's only one," answered the inspector. "We thought that if wecould only find-Good heavens, Mr. Holmes! what is the matter?"My poor friend's face had suddenly assumed the most dreadfulexpression. His eyes rolled upward, his features writhed in agony, andwith a suppressed groan he dropped on his face upon the ground.Horrified at the suddenness and severity of the attack, we carried himinto the kitchen, where he lay back in a large chair and breathedheavily for some minutes. Finally, with a shamefaced apology for hisweakness, he rose once more.
2. "That was very wise. The matter should certainly be inquired into. Iwill go back with you to Tuxbury Old Park."
3. "They are both old and tried servants."
4. "From whom?"
5. "Did the men leave no clue?"
6. "'My dear, dear son, now that approaching disgrace begins todarken the closing years of my life, I can write with all truth andhonesty that it is not the terror of the law, it is not the loss of myposition in the county, nor is it my fall in the eyes of all whohave known me, which cuts me to the heart; but it is the thoughtthat you should come to blush for me-you who love me and who haveseldom, I hope, had reason to do other than respect me. But if theblow falls which is forever hanging over me, then I should wish you toread this, that you may know straight from me how far I have been toblame. On the other hand, if all should go well (which may kind GodAlmighty grant!), then, if by any chance this paper should be stillundestroyed and should fall into your hands, I conjure you, by all youhold sacred, by the memory of your dear mother, and by the lovewhich has been between us, to hurl it into the fire and to nevergive one thought to it again.

1. "Yes, sir. There is really no one else when you come to think of it.That's the advantage of this solitude. We narrow it down to a verysmall compass. If he did not do it, then who did?"
2. "And now I come to the queer part of the business. I was in diggingsout Hampstead way, 17 Potter's Terrace. Well, I was sitting doing asmoke that very evening after I had been promised the appointment, when up came my landlady with a card which had 'Arthur Pinner,Financial Agent' printed upon it. I had never heard the name beforeand could not imagine what he wanted with me, but of course I askedher to show him up. In he walked, a middle-sized, dark-haired,dark-eyed, black-bearded man, with a touch of the sheeny about hisnose. He had a brisk kind of way with him and spoke sharply, like aman who knew the value of time.
3. "God help us!" said Holmes after a long silence. "Why does fate playsuch tricks with poor, helpless worms? I never hear of such a caseas this that I do not think of Baxter's words, and say, 'There, butfor the grace of God, goes Sherlock Holmes.'"
4. "Prove that, Mr. Holmes, and I am your debtor forever.""I will do so, but in doing so I must wound you deeply in anotherdirection."
5. "Nay, he was bringing home the goose as a peace-offering tohis wife. Remember the card upon the bird's leg."
6. "Was there a fellow about thirty, black-bearded, dark, of middlesize?"

1. "Oh, surely if you consider the events at first they can onlypoint to one conclusion."
2. "Do you know anything about her history?"
3. "Our difficulties are not over," he remarked, shaking his head. "Ourpolice work ends, but our legal work begins."
4. "Oh, anywhere. It's all the same to me."
5. "The matter is too serious for any hesitation. Your life maydepend upon your compliance."
6. "Because of your knowledge of Eastern diseases."

1. "We have got to the deductions and the inferences," said Lestrade, winking at me. "I find it hard enough to tackle facts, Holmes, withoutflying away after theories and fancies."
2. "Carried off from where?"
3. "Who keeps Lady Beatrice Falder company?" he asked at last."There is her maid, Carrie Evans. She has been with her this fiveyears."
4、 "The burglar, sir. He was off like a shot and got clean away. He'djust broke in at the pantry window when William came on him and methis end in saving his master's property."
5、 "As to the stick, Mr. Holmes, you know as well as I do that acriminal is often flurried, and does such things, which a cool manwould avoid. He was very likely afraid to go back to the room. Give meanother theory that would fit the facts."

I had intended "The Adventure of the Abbey Grange" to be the last ofthose exploits of my friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, which I shouldever communicate to the public. This resolution of mine was not due toany lack of material, since I have notes of many hundreds of casesto which I have never alluded, nor was it caused by any waninginterest on the part of my readers in the singular personality andunique methods of this remarkable man. The real reason lay in thereluctance which Mr. Holmes has shown to the continued publicationof his experiences. So long as he was in actual professionalpractice the records of his successes were of some practical valueto him, but since he has definitely retired from London and betakenhimself to study and bee-farming on the Sussex Downs, notoriety hasbecome hateful to him, and he has peremptorily requested that hiswishes in this matter should be strictly observed. It was only upon myrepresenting to him that I had given a promise that "The Adventureof the Second Stain" should be published when the times were ripe, andpointing out to him that it is only appropriate that this longseries of episodes should culminate in the most importantinternational case which he has ever been called upon to handle, that I at last succeeded in obtaining his consent that a carefullyguarded account of the incident should at last be laid before thepublic. If in telling the story I seem to be somewhat vague in certaindetails, the public will readily understand that there is an excellentreason for my reticence.
