1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Ten more."
2. Now, as Carrie watched him out of the corner of her eye, certainsound thoughts came into her head. He had erred, true, but whathad she done? He was kindly and good-natured for all his egotism.Throughout this argument he had said nothing very harsh. On theother hand, there was Hurstwood--a greater deceiver than he. Hehad pretended all this affection, all this passion, and he waslying to her all the while. Oh, the perfidy of men! And she hadloved him. There could be nothing more in that quarter. Shewould see Hurstwood no more. She would write him and let himknow what she thought. Thereupon what would she do? Here werethese rooms. Here was Drouet, pleading for her to remain.Evidently things could go on here somewhat as before, if all werearranged. It would be better than the street, without a place tolay her head.
3. He is becoming too wise to hearken always to instincts anddesires; he is still too weak to always prevail against them. Asa beast, the forces of life aligned him with them; as a man, hehas not yet wholly learned to align himself with the forces. Inthis intermediate stage he wavers--neither drawn in harmony withnature by his instincts nor yet wisely putting himself intoharmony by his own free-will. He is even as a wisp in the wind, moved by every breath of passion, acting now by his will and nowby his instincts, erring with one, only to retrieve by the other, falling by one, only to rise by the other--a creature ofincalculable variability. We have the consolation of knowingthat evolution is ever in action, that the ideal is a light thatcannot fail. He will not forever balance thus between good andevil. When this jangle of free-will instinct shall have beenadjusted, when perfect under standing has given the former thepower to replace the latter entirely, man will no longer vary. The needle of understanding will yet point steadfast andunwavering to the distinct pole of truth.
4. "Where is the conductor?" yelled one of the officers, getting hiseye on that individual, who had come nervously forward to standby Hurstwood. The latter had stood gazing upon the scene withmore astonishment than fear.
5. "Oh, don't," said Carrie.
6. "You'd better sneak," she called.

计划指导

1. He strolled up and down the polished floor of the resort, hishands in his pockets, his brow wrinkled, his mouth set. He wasgetting some vague comfort out of a good cigar, but it was nopanacea for the ill which affected him. Every once in a while hewould clinch his fingers and tap his foot--signs of the stirringmental process he was undergoing. His whole nature wasvigorously and powerfully shaken up, and he was finding whatlimits the mind has to endurance. He drank more brandy and sodathan he had any evening in months. He was altogether a fineexample of great mental perturbation.
2. The upshot of this was that the change was eventually effected;not without great gloom on the part of Carrie. It reallyaffected her more seriously than anything that had yet happened. She began to look upon Hurstwood wholly as a man, and not as alover or husband. She felt thoroughly bound to him as a wife, and that her lot was cast with his, whatever it might be; but shebegan to see that he was gloomy and taciturn, not a young, strong, and buoyant man. He looked a little bit old to her aboutthe eyes and mouth now, and there were other things which placedhim in his true rank, so far as her estimation was concerned. She began to feel that she had made a mistake. Incidentally, shealso began to recall the fact that he had practically forced herto flee with him.
3. "Oh, he's not here now," said the policeman.
4. He looked at her quite tenderly for his kind. There were someloose bills in his vest pocket--greenbacks. They were soft andnoiseless, and he got his fingers about them and crumpled them upin his hand.
5. "Will you?" said Carrie.
6. She sat down in one of the rocking-chairs, while Hurstwood waitedfor the boy, who soon knocked.

推荐功能

1. The other half of this picture came when young Blyford, son ofBlyford, the soap manufacturer, walked home with her. Mrs.Hurstwood was on the third floor, sitting in a rocking-chairreading, and happened to look out at the time.
2. Minnie was no companion for her sister--she was too old. Herthoughts were staid and solemnly adapted to a condition. IfHanson had any pleasant thoughts or happy feelings he concealedthem. He seemed to do all his mental operations without the aidof physical expression. He was as still as a deserted chamber.Carrie, on the other hand, had the blood of youth and someimagination. Her day of love and the mysteries of courtship werestill ahead. She could think of things she would like to do, ofclothes she would like to wear, and of places she would like tovisit. These were the things upon which her mind ran, and it waslike meeting with opposition at every turn to find no one here tocall forth or respond to her feelings.
3. "He didn't say anything to me," Hurstwood concluded, finding itdifficult to refrain from a bitter tone.
4. "Mr. Vance doesn't seem to find it very hard."
5. Chapter XLI
6. She bandied no more words with him, but hurried away, reachingher own door quite out of breath. There was something in theman's look which frightened her.

应用

1. "Hashed brown potatoes."
2. Carrie came away wearily, somewhat more abashed for her pains.
3. "Nothing with a sleeper. Yes, there is, too," he added. "Thereis a mail train out of here at three o'clock."
4、 He looked down at his paper and shook his head negatively.
5、 He tried to speak steadily, but his voice trembled a little.
