Bonacieux; "somebody is coming."Immediately the door opened, and the superior entered."Did you come from Boulogne?" demanded she of Milady."Yes," replied she, trying to recover her self-possession. "Who wantsme?"
2. "I threw the rest away with horror, and waited, with the dew offear upon my brow.
3. "Madame, those men were more dangerous than any robbers couldhave been, for they are the agents of the cardinal; and as toyour husband, Monsieur Bonacieux, he is not here because he wasyesterday evening conducted to the Bastille."
4. "Why did you so maladroitly restore me the handkerchief?""Why did you so awkwardly let it fall?"
5. Sometimes when the cardinal, always on horseback, like the lowestGENDARME of the army, cast a pensive glance over those works, soslowly keeping pace with his wishes, which the engineers, broughtfrom all the corners of France, were executing under his orders,if he met a Musketeer of the company of Treville, he drew nearand looked at him in a peculiar manner, and not recognizing inhim one of our four companions, he turned his penetrating lookand profound thoughts in another direction.
6. "What do you mean to do with that purse?" whispered he."Why, I meant to pass it over to you, my dear Athos.""Me! why to me?"

1. "Their vows were sacred and irrevocable. Their connection could notlast long without ruining both. She prevailed upon him to leave thecountry; but to leave the country, to fly together, to reach anotherpart of France, where they might live at ease because unknown, money wasnecessary. Neither had any. The priest stole the sacred vases, andsold them; but as they were preparing to escape together, they were botharrested.
2. Milady waited, then, with much impatience, for she feared the daywould pass away without her seeing Felton again. At last, in anhour after the scene we have just described, she heard someonespeaking in a low voice at the door. Presently the door opened, and she perceived Felton.
3. "But, my Lord--"
4. "They are beating the general alarm."
5. Ah! no, we were mistaken; he had discovered a purchaser forhis diamond.
6. "Twenty men."

1. She has no occasion to teach me the way in which a man ofspirit may obtain his pardon. I will come and ask mine ateleven o'clock this evening.
2. "Alas, monseigneur, we were not in the plot, as you will soonsee. Monsieur your friend (pardon for not calling him by thehonorable name which no doubt he bears, but we do not know thatname), Monsieur your friend, having disabled two men with hispistols, retreated fighting with his sword, with which he disableone of my men, and stunned me with a blow of the flat side ofit."
3. "Begone, then, to your beautiful duchess; I will detain you nolonger."
4. He began to reflect upon the events that had passed; they werenumerous and inauspicious. It was scarcely eleven o'clock in themorning, and yet this morning had already brought him intodisgrace with M. de Treville, who could not fail to think themanner in which D'Artagnan had left him a little cavalier.Besides this, he had drawn upon himself two good duels with twomen, each capable of killing three D'Artagnans-with twoMusketeers, in short, with two of those beings whom he esteemedso greatly that he placed them in his mind and heart above allother men.
5. "Afraid of being heard! Why, there is nothing improper in ourconversation, my dear Planchet, and no one could find fault withit."
6. "Insolent!" cried Milady; and as if acted upon by a spring, shebounded toward the baron, who awaited her attack with his armscrossed, but nevertheless with one hand on the hilt of his sword."Come!" said he. "I know you are accustomed to assassinatepeople; but I warn you I shall defend myself, even against you.""You are right," said Milady. "You have all the appearance ofbeing cowardly enough to lift your hand against a woman.""Perhaps so; and I have an excuse, for mine would not be thefirst hand of a man that has been placed upon you, I imagine."And the baron pointed, with a slow and accusing gesture, to theleft shoulder of Milady, which he almost touched with his finger.Milady uttered a deep, inward shriek, and retreated to a cornerof the room like a panther which crouches for a spring."Oh, growl as much as you please," cried Lord de Winter, "butdon't try to bite, for I warn you that it would be to yourdisadvantage. There are here no procurators who regulatesuccessions beforehand. There is no knight-errant to come andseek a quarrel with me on account of the fair lady I detain aprisoner; but I have judges quite ready who will quickly disposeof a woman so shameless as to glide, a bigamist, into the bed ofLord de Winter, my brother. And these judges, I warn you, willsoon send you to an executioner who will make both your shouldersalike."

1. "Spain is her country," replied D'Artagnan; "and it is verynatural that she should love the Spanish, who are the children ofthe same soil as herself. As to the second reproach, I haveheard it said that she does not love the English, but anEnglishman."
2. D'Artagnan uttered an exclamation of surprise andindignation.
3. Richelieu remained standing, leaning against the mantelpiece; a tablewas between him and D'Artagnan.
5、 But at the street gate, Porthos was talking with the soldier onguard. Between the two talkers there was just enough room for aman to pass. D'Artagnan thought it would suffice for him, and hesprang forward like a dart between them. But D'Artagnan hadreckoned without the wind. As he was about to pass, the windblew out Porthos's long cloak, and D'Artagnan rushed straightinto the middle of it. Without doubt, Porthos had reasons fornot abandoning this part of his vestments, for instead ofquitting his hold on the flap in his hand, he pulled it towardhim, so that D'Artagnan rolled himself up in the velvet by amovement of rotation explained by the persistency of Porthos.D'Artagnan, hearing the Musketeer swear, wished to escape fromthe cloak, which blinded him, and sought to find his way fromunder the folds of it. He was particularly anxious to avoidmarring the freshness of the magnificent baldric we areacquainted with; but on timidly opening his eyes, he foundhimself with his nose fixed between the two shoulders ofPorthos--that is to say, exactly upon the baldric.Alas, like most things in this world which have nothing in theirfavor but appearances, the baldric was glittering with gold inthe front, but was nothing but simple buff behind. Vaingloriousas he was, Porthos could not afford to have a baldric wholly ofgold, but had at least half. One could comprehend the necessityof the cold and the urgency of the cloak.

D'Artagnan thought of the appointment Mme. Bonacieux had madewith him for that very evening; but we are bound to say, to thecredit of our hero, that the bad opinion entertained by M. deTreville of women in general, did not inspire him with the leastsuspicion of his pretty hostess.
